Preserving Yesterday’s Breeds & Tomorrow’s Soils
Hi — we’re Firefly Homestead, a family farm in Centerburg, Ohio, run by Derek and Melody Harmon. We moved here from Columbus in 2021 after outgrowing a city lot, and we’ve been building the place ever since around good food, calm animals, and soil that gets better instead of worse.
Food became a big part of Melody’s life when she was diagnosed with Celiac disease more than twenty years ago. There weren’t many gluten-free convenience foods then, so she learned to cook and bake from scratch. That habit — real ingredients, recipes you can trust — still shapes what we grow, what we sell, and how we teach.
Today we raise Irish Dexter cattle and Meishan pigs: heritage breeds chosen for temperament, hardiness, and the kind of meat quality you remember from a well-raised animal. We also keep a small farm store of salts, sourdough, and shares when they are in season.
Our goal is simple: steward good genetics and healthy ground, raise animals with respect, and share the results with people who care where their food and breeding stock come from.
Why These Breeds
Irish Dexters are a small dual-purpose cattle breed that thrives on pasture and fits the scale of a family farm. Meishan pigs are an ancient, exceptionally docile lard breed known for marbled pork and outstanding mothering ability. Together they reflect what we value: animals that work with the land rather than against it.
We are among the early registered Meishan breeders in Ohio and continue to build both herds with an eye toward calm dispositions and practical homestead performance.
