Dexter Cattle

Irish Dexter Cattle

Small in stature, big on flavor — a heritage breed built for the homestead.

Why Dexters?

  • Efficient foragers — thrifty on pasture and roughage; they do more with less
  • Dual-purpose heritage — historically valued for both beef and milk
  • Manageable size — easier handling and infrastructure than full-size commercial cattle
  • Flavorful beef — well-marbled meat prized by families who care about taste and quality
  • Hardy and adaptable — selected over generations for resilience in real farm conditions

About the Breed

Irish Dexter cattle originated in southwestern Ireland and are among the smallest cattle breeds in the world. Historically kept by smallholders who needed an animal that could produce both milk and meat without requiring vast acreage, Dexters remain an ideal choice for family farms and regenerative systems.

Adult Dexters typically weigh far less than commercial beef breeds, yet they convert grass efficiently and finish with excellent marbling. Their compact size makes them easier to handle, gentler on fences and pastures, and a practical fit for freezers and small processors.

How We Raise Them

At Firefly Homestead, our Dexters are raised with pasture at the center of their diet and daily life. We believe cattle should live as cattle — grazing, resting, and moving in ways that support both animal health and soil health.

Our practices emphasize:

  • Pasture-based living — access to forage and outdoor space as the foundation of husbandry
  • Low-stress handling — calm genetics and quiet management so animals stay gentle and workable
  • Thoughtful breeding — selecting for temperament, structural soundness, and performance on grass
  • Soil stewardship — livestock as partners in building healthier ground over time

We are always refining how we manage the herd. If you visit or buy from us, we are happy to talk through how a particular animal was raised.

Beef & Breeding Stock

Depending on the season and herd plan, we may offer:

  • Hanging-weight beef — grass-fed, grass-finished; quarter, half, or whole shares processed at a licensed facility
  • Breeding stock — animals selected for homestead and small-farm programs
  • Feeders — young stock for those finishing their own beef

Reserve beef from the Irish Dexter Beef listing — processing dates, share sizes, deposits, and how buying works are there. For breeding stock or feeders, contact us.
